After nearly 4 years since the groundbreaking ceremony on January 5, 2021, the Long Thanh International Airport project has made many important strides. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested to complete phase 1 by the end of 2025 and put it into operation from the beginning of 2026, with a commitment to turn Long Thanh into a modern and strategic aviation center of the region. On December 3, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the Central Working Group continued to inspect Long Thanh Airport. During this inspection, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested to complete the construction of Long Thanh Airport before December 31, 2025 and put it into operation before February 28, 2026. Previously, at the end of November, implementing the direction of the National Assembly, the Government added to the draft resolution of the 8th Session of the 15th National Assembly on adjusting the investment policy of the Long Thanh International Airport project. Accordingly, two important contents related to the Long Thanh International Airport project, which are adjusting the scale and implementation time in phase 1, were mentioned for the National Assembly to decide. Accordingly, in terms of scale, in phase 1, the Long Thanh airport project will also invest in a second runway, instead of only building one runway as previously planned. It is expected that the National Assembly will allow the Government to organize the approval of the feasibility study report to adjust phase 1 of the Long Thanh airport project according to its authority, without having to wait for the National Assembly's approval. At the end of September 2024, when inspecting the construction progress of Long Thanh airport, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh urged the entire team and relevant departments implementing the Long Thanh international airport project to accelerate as much as possible so that this important national project can be completed soon. Accordingly, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that the Long Thanh international airport project is the largest airport project in our country to date, of special importance to the Southeast and the whole country. The Prime Minister commended the units for their efforts but also reminded the parties to try to speed up even more. In addition to the quite positive and satisfactory results achieved, some work is still slow. The Prime Minister requested to review all contracts with foreign partners to ensure synchronization; control the quality of the project; always care about workers at the construction site... In case of any problems, it is necessary to immediately report to the competent authority, the highest direct authority is the Prime Minister - Head of the State Steering Committee for important national projects and works, key to the Transport sector. Regarding the immediate implementation of the second runway, the Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Transport to urgently report on the investment plan. In the most recent inspection of the airport project, the Prime Minister continued to request the rapid implementation of the second runway. At the same time, immediately prepare well for the planning of Long Thanh airport city and be ready for the second phase of investment in the construction of Long Thanh airport. The Prime Minister requested that Long Thanh airport be completed before December 31, 2025 and put into operation before February 28, 2026 as planned. According to the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV - Investor of Long Thanh Airport project), the Long Thanh Airport project phase 1 consists of 4 component projects. Up to now, component projects 1, 2 and 3 have achieved and exceeded the schedule, but component project 4 is still behind schedule. Specifically, component project 3 (essential works - invested by ACV) currently has more than 6,000 personnel and 2,700 pieces of equipment working day and night at the construction site. The bid packages are assessed to ensure quality and progress. At component project 2 (works serving air traffic management, invested by Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation - VATM), starting construction at the end of September 2023, the contractor is currently constructing the air traffic control tower and related items. Currently, the air traffic control tower has completed the rough construction, reaching a height of 107.93m/123m and is 2 months ahead of schedule. Up to now, the technical departments are continuing to complete, process, paint the roof steel at the workshop, and install the electromechanical system. This area is the "headquarters" of operations, ensuring flight operations. Component project 1 (headquarters of state management agencies), is where the headquarters of the airport, customs, immigration management department, and local police are built. Currently, this area is being implemented on schedule, only the headquarters of the quarantine agency is being delayed. As for component project 4 (ground service works), including 17 items, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has completed and issued bidding documents, expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2026. Currently, this area (considered the "heart" of the airport) has taken shape.
